Jaguar Kicks Off Pebble Beach Weekend With All-New Luxury Car Debut

Jaguar Kicks Off Pebble Beach Weekend With All-New Luxury Car DebutThe all-new 2010 Jaguar XJ will make its North American debut at the 59th Annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Thursday Night Kick-Off Event, held today at Pebble Beach in Monterey, Calif. The debut will be the first shot in the Pebble Beach luxury car showdown in which multiple high end marques are introducing new luxury automobiles.

The Jaguar XJ flagship which goes on sale early 2010 offers a seductive mix of striking design and robust performance made possible by Jaguar’s aerospace-inspired lightweight aluminum body technology. The all-new Jaguar XJ will have a starting price of $72,500 MSRP and top out at $115,000 for the 510 hp XJ Supersport.

“Today’s challenging economy raises the stakes for luxury marques bringing new products to market,” says Richard Beattie, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Sales, Jaguar North America. “Not every new automobile will win the hearts and minds of luxury car buyers. This Pebble Beach weekend is incredibly important in establishing the design and performance credibility of a new luxury automobile. We believe the Jaguar XJ will create tremendous new excitement for the Jaguar brand.”

Built on the success of the XK and XF, the new XJ is the third step in the revitalization of the Jaguar brand and redefines the world’s perception of a large sports sedan. The new XJ will be available in both standard and long wheelbase models. The long wheelbase offers an even more sumptuous and refined environment for rear-seat passengers with an additional five inches of legroom without compromising the XJ’s trunk, which features power opening and closing for convenient access to the 15.2 cu. ft. storage space (with standard alloy space saver spare wheel).

The all-new Jaguar XJ brings new standards of sustainability to the luxury vehicle segment. Its lightweight aluminum structure makes it at least 300 lbs. lighter over steel body construction, and is made with 50 percent recycled material allowing the XJ to minimize its carbon footprint and create a potential savings of three tons of CO2 per vehicle, compared to a body shell made entirely of new aluminum. These aerospace-inspired aluminum body technologies also provide benefits to performance, handling and fuel economy, while delivering increased strength, refinement and safety.

“We are proud to reveal the all-new Jaguar XJ in Pebble Beach as it marks a major milestone for Jaguar in North America, which is expected to be the world’s largest XJ market,” says Beattie. “The debut of our ultimate four-door flagship follows recent recognition for exceptional dependability and clearly demonstrates our commitment to producing the finest cars in the world — fast, beautiful cars that offer luxury, performance and first-rate quality.”

The first impression of the all-new XJ is its visual assertiveness. The XJ’s sleek lines are complemented by a taut waistline, which further accentuates the impression of length and elegance, and creates a natural tension as it fades from the front arch into the middle section of the car before reappearing as a strong haunch towards the rear.

The all-new XJ offers a modern reinterpretation of a number of key XJ design cues while maintaining the highest standards of personal luxury. This is evident in how the strong, muscular lower half of the car contrasts with the slim and graceful quality of the roofline — a nod to the original 1968 XJ sedan.

A standard panoramic glass roof is an integral part of the all-new XJ’s design, enabling the car to have a lower, more streamlined roofline, while dramatically enhancing the feeling of light and space inside. The LED light clusters wrap stylishly over the rear fenders, and feature three dramatic red vertical strips while the elongated teardrop shape of the side windows establishes the car’s silhouette. The rear of the all-new XJ is notable for its pure, sculpted shape. With a conscious absence of ornamentation, the rear features only a single leaping Jaguar.

The face of the all-new 2010 XJ is confident, with a wide front track and short overhang contributing to the finely judged proportions. The nose of the car follows Jaguar’s new design language with a bold and assertive treatment — the powerful mesh grille and slim xenon headlights create a strong road presence while the wrap-around rear screen reduces the visual weight of the pillars and gives the impression of an exotic “floating” roof.

“The new XJ is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the quintessential Jaguar,” says Ian Callum, Design Director, Jaguar Cars. “Its visual impact stems from the elongated teardrop shape of the car’s side windows; that powerful stance and its wide track. It is the most emphatic statement yet of Jaguar’s new design direction.”

The sleek design and refined luxury is continued inside the all-new XJ by mixing newly advanced technologies and contemporary design to create an environment more akin to a state-of-the-art living space than a car cabin. The overriding impression from the interior is a sense of personal space that is enhanced by the clean, simple form of the leather-wrapped instrument panel sitting low across the vehicle. At the center of the instrument panel is an analog clock with individual chrome chaplets, a spun metal face and iridescent blue background; a look inspired by luxury watches.

The all-new XJ’s cabin is a marvel in its own right, blending elegant, contemporary design with the comfort, luxury and unmistakable sporting style of a Jaguar. Chrome and piano black detailing provide an eye-catching contrast to the beautifully crafted leather and veneer surfaces. To further complement the cabin design is a level of choice in colors, veneers and leathers not seen before in a Jaguar. Four specification levels — XJ, XJL, Supercharged and Supersport — allow the customer to tailor the car to suit their tastes. The top-of-the-range Supersport provides the ultimate expression of performance and luxury, with a specification that includes a leather headlining, semi-aniline leather seats and veneers with laser inlays.

Stunning, 12.3-inch high-definition Virtual Instruments(TM) complement an innovative 8-inch Touch-screen that displays vehicle functions ranging from audio and video to navigation and climate control. Premium surround sound options include the top-of-the-range 1200W Bowers & Wilkins system, which is standard on the Supercharged and Supersport models. Advanced infotainment features also include hard drive-based audio and navigation systems, and comprehensive connectivity for portable audio and video devices via the powerful Media Hub.

The all-new XJ’s beauty is much more than skin-deep. All engines transmit power through an enhanced version of Jaguar’s acclaimed electronically controlled, six-speed automatic transmission which has a fully-adaptive shift system that delivers extremely smooth gear changes and works to balance performance and economy.

With the XJ, Jaguar has built upon its leading quality performance using the latest virtual product technologies. These proven Jaguar dynamic technologies are taken to new levels in the all-new XJ. Features such as air suspension, Adaptive Dynamics (continuously variable damping), Active Differential Control (on Supercharged and Supersport) and quick-ratio power steering deliver the blend of responsive, dynamic handling and a refined, supple ride expected from a Jaguar.

The new XJ will be available in the US with a choice of three engines — a 5.0 liter 385hp naturally aspirated V8, 5.0 liter 470hp supercharged V8 and a 5.0 liter 510hp supercharged V8. In naturally-aspirated form, the XJ develops 380 lb.-ft. of torque. The supercharged versions develop 424 lb.-ft. and 461 lb.-ft. of torque, respectively. All three engines combine deft performance, unparalleled character, peerless pedigree, and have a classic Jaguar blend of strength and precision.

The all-new 2010 Jaguar XJ delivers a driving experience that is just as memorable as the car’s sleek and alluring appearance, combining responsive, sporting dynamics with the luxurious drive expected from a Jaguar.

2010 Lincoln MKT Concept Car

Lincoln MKT Concept
Growth opportunity: The Lincoln MKT concept shows a new potential vehicle for Lincoln, demonstrating the brand’s new design language works as well on a spacious luxury utility vehicle as it does luxury sedans like the new 2009 Lincoln MKS.EcoBoost power: Ford’s global solution for improving fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions for millions of customers – EcoBoost engine technology – powers Lincoln MKT.

Responsible luxury: The Lincoln MKT concept reaches a new level of responsible luxury with the use of more environmentally friendly materials that offer a premium look and feel.

DETROIT, Jan. 14, 2008 – Lincoln today pulls the wraps off a new premium utility concept vehicle – unsurpassed in its balance of spaciousness, comfort and fuel efficiency – that shows customers a new way to tour in style.

The company is introducing EcoBoost engines that will deliver up to 20 percent better fuel economy on half a million Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles annually in North America within the next five years. Ford will first introduce EcoBoost in the Lincoln MKS next year. The luxury sedan will feature a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6, delivering an estimated 340-horsepower and more than 340 lb.-ft. of torque on regular gas.

“EcoBoost engines can deliver better fuel economy and performance on a full range of vehicles, from small cars to large trucks,” said Mark Fields, president of The Americas. “The Lincoln MKT concept offers the comfort of a luxury sedan, the spaciousness and flexibility of a full-size utility and the performance of a sporty roadster – executed with new technologies and materials that make it as environmentally friendly as it is elegant.

“The Lincoln MKT concept is understated but powerful – inside, outside and under the hood.”

Premium Efficiency

The Lincoln MKT concept features an EcoBoost engine that’s flex-fuel capable, providing the driver with the flexibility to switch back and forth between premium gasoline and E85 ethanol-gas blend. Burning these high-octane fuels, the MKT concept’s V-6 engine delivers 415 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque – an impressive 118 horsepower per liter.

The concept’s engine is mated to a six-speed transmission for greater fuel efficiency. Fuel efficiency also is helped by weight-saving, eco-friendly “upcycled” materials from SABIC Innovative Plastics.

Some applications of the resin help the vehicle resist heat and chemicals and also improve overall noise and vibration.

Spacious Elegance

Drivers and passengers alike will appreciate the Lincoln MKT concept’s spaciousness – right down to the seats that mirror those found in first-class aircraft cabins. Four executive-sized chairs offer comfort and unprecedented leg room. As an added pleasure, second-row heated and cooled thigh supports deploy from under the seats, while footrests deploy rearward from the front seats, allowing passengers to fully recline.

“We envisioned this concept as a modern grand tourer, really a Learjet of the road,” said Peter Horbury, executive director of Design, The Americas. “With the Lincoln MKT concept, you find a premium utility that could as easily accommodate a businessperson slipping into the back seat on the way to his or her next meeting in the chaos of Manhattan as a family packed up for a weekend getaway to the coast.”

The vehicle’s symmetrical interior design divides the cabin thoughtfully, providing all four passengers equal access to the vehicle’s appointments.
Through the use of soothing tone-on-colors, eco-friendly materials, ambient lighting and flexible storage, the MKT concept offers customers a unique combination of serenity and connectivity.

Environmentally friendly details include the plush, hand-knotted rug made from banana silk that covers the floor and complements the contrasting Creamy Pearl chromium-free leather seats.
Elsewhere in the interior, chrome accents – including a one-piece sculpted door handle featuring a baroque-influenced graphic – mirror the elegant lines on the concept’s exterior.

For the center stack, designers invented and patented a solid-state lighting technology that allows them to project onto a contoured surface in 3-D. Until now, all projection was limited to flat surfaces with square or rectangular boundaries like a flat-screen television.
This new technology allowed designers to use non-traditional shapes and spaces for information displays as well as unique storage spaces in the center stack.

The MKT concept’s center console, which runs the entire length of the vehicle to create a feeling of continuity between the upper and lower portion of the cabin, contains individual air vents, audio and climate controls, and personal storage.
In addition, a flat screen deploys from a floating overhead console which also hides two small cameras, each aimed at one of rear seats to provide on-screen “conference calling.”

In the rear cargo area, a smart space behind the second-row seats provides additional storage. Designers also included a power lift system that raises and lowers a series of rails behind the rear seats to allow flat-load or compartmentalized storage.

Lincoln’s timeless design on a whole new package

The Lincoln MKT concept features Lincoln’s signature double-wing chrome grille, encapsulating LED headlamps that wrap around into the sculptured hood, lending the luxury utility a powerful presence.

Its elegant body side chamfer runs along the shoulder, with dynamic haunches over the rear wheel arches. Inset into each front fender and traveling through the door panels are chrome Lincoln stars with spears that add visual length to the car. Meanwhile, winged, curb-clearing doors give the car a dramatic sense of direction, agility and forward movement.

A substantial C-pillar creates an aura of privacy for the rear occupants. Like limousines, the MKT cuts an interesting profile – long, low and comfortably wide. The signature roofline runs the entire length of the greenhouse and remains uninterrupted. The roof itself is glass, allowing in natural light.
As an unconventional surprise, designers incorporated a bustle-back design into the concept.
The classic look provides massive storage capacity, crucial for any trip.
From the rear, the concept is instantly recognizable as a Lincoln, thanks to full-width LED taillamps stretching from side to side.

The exterior is bathed in a rich Liquid Bronze Metallic paint that compliments the chrome brightwork. The intricate 21-inch, 14-spoke interlocking chrome aluminum wheels have body color accents.

“The Lincoln MKT concept represents harmony in motion, balancing sculptured shapes and contours traditionally associated with beautiful cars on a crossover vehicle that offers the luxury of space and efficient, powerful performance,” Horbury said.

About Ford Motor Company

Ford Motor Company, a global automotive industry leader based in Dearborn, Mich., manufactures or distributes automobiles in 200 markets across six continents. With about 260,000 employees and about 100 plants worldwide, the company’s core and affiliated automotive brands include Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercury Volvo and Mazda. The company provides financial services through Ford Motor Credit Company. For more information regarding the company and its products visit www.ford.com.

The Ford Flex-based Lincoln MKT has been given the green light by Ford execs and it appears as though the crossover’s development is progressing on schedule. Spy photographers spotted the MKT on the open roads of Michigan just hours ago.

Although the front is draped with camouflage, Lincoln’s signature waterfall grille can be seen peering out from beneath — the very same that was used on the MKT Concept. Overall, the MKT — which is being developed under the codename D472 — is expected to largely mirror the styling of the MKT Concept.

Ford exec Mark Fields described the MKT concept as “…full-size premium utility offers the comfort of a luxury sedan, the spaciousness and flexibility of a full-size utility and the performance of a sporty roadster…,” and we think – by the looks of this prototype – that Ford is staying rather close to the concept for this production luxury utility vehicle.

Look for the base model MKT to be powered by a 270 horsepower, but the range-topping model will likely be powered by the same 415 horsepower EcoBoost 3.5L V6 used in the MKT concept.

The MKT’s face appears to be heavily inspired by the MKR sedan concept. Of course, many of the MKR’s design cues were passed along to the production MKS, so the company’s two newest offerings should look nice side-by-side at Lincoln dealers.

Interestingly, the MKT concept appeared to have a unique touch-screen interface in the center console, but so far Ford has made no comment on the technology. It’s also not known if the feature is intended for production.

new Mercedes-Benz SL to reliably insane

new Mercedes-Benz SL to reliably insane "BRABUS" might as well be German for, "Hey, why not?" This would seem to be the question its engineers ask themselves before they stuff ludicrous amounts of power under the hoods of Mercedes-Benz cars and trucks. This behavior is well-documented, and it continues unabated with the arrival of MB's new SL. Full wheel/tire, interior, and styling packages are a given. Backing up those enhanced looks is an assortment of tuning packages capable of providing more power than even Montgomery Scott could ever plead for.

The SV12 S Biturbo engine swap appears to have been created by someone with a severe, pathological hatred for tires. This is the same engine used in the Brabus Bullit, and it dishes out a predictably ridiculous 720 horsepower and 973 lb-ft of torque. The latter number is electronically restrained to a mere 811 lb-ft., and a top speed of well over 200 mph comes with the territory. Not interested in the full swap? No worries, BRABUS has your back. SL 65 AMG drivers can opt for the T 65 S package, which bumps the stock V12 Biturbo to 705 hp/811 lb-ft. There's a solution for the all-motor SL 63 AMG as well that packs on an additional 40 horses over stock. This pattern continues right on down the line -- even the "lowly" V6-powered cars can be tuned to deliver 327 hp/ 310 lb-ft. Bonkers. Er, BRABUS, rather.

2009 Mercedes SL63 AMG and SL600

2009 Mercedes SL63 AMG and SL600Finding the ideal luxury sports car is a Goldilocks proposition: cars that fulfill either descriptive – luxury or sports – are piled high as Annapurna. For instance, the Ferrari F430 is a luxurious sports car, but it's not a luxury car. The current CL63 is a sporty luxury car, but it's not a sports car. Try to find a conveyance in which the little girl with the golden locks would sigh "This one is just right" – a car that has the sporting reflexes to keep her heart beating and a cabin supple enough for her to unwind in when the twisties are finished – and you see the field is disturbingly minuscule. Against all odds, the SL63 is that car: Goldilocks' Golden Mean.

Tuner Tuesdays: Carlsson takes on the Mercedes-Benz

Tuner Tuesdays: Carlsson takes on the Mercedes-Benz When our man Jonathon Ramsey sampled the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG last year, he found it to be "just right." So we have to cringe a little when a tuning company getting their hands on one. Why alter a car that needs nothing? To Carlsson's credit, it's hard to argue against more horsepower (600), more torque (520 lb-ft), a higher top speed (202 mph), and larger carbon composite brakes. Other modifications, like the new grill with the prancing Carlsson horse and the butterfly doors are more likely to draw criticism. The same goes for the paint, which Carlsson calls Stealth Titanium Graphite and claims is the "most matte" color ever produced. If all of that sounds like your cup of tea, Carlsson is offering complete cars for a mere 272,500 Euros, or about $355,000 for us Statesiders.

Hamann Aston Martin Vantage

Hamann Aston Martin VantageHamann definitely knows how to refine luxury cars and each car modified by them is almost perfect. Aston Martin Vantage is another luxury car they wanted to improve and they made a tuning kit with lovely sport accessories and thrilling body design. The new body kit is really stylish and it’s made from fibre glass or matt carbon with perfect aerodynamics. Customers could choose for the front side of the car between a front spoiler lip or even an entire front skirt. On the car’s sides, the guys from Hamann attached striking side skirts that gives a lower and more stretched look to this Aston Martin. For the rear side of the car, they made a special spoiler which can be enhanced with a three-part rear diffuser.

Hamann Motorsport designed special light alloy wheels for this car named Edition Race which combine elegance and sportiness. They also installed new springs which lower the V8 Vantage with 20 to 30 mm and improves the car’s handling and stability. Since this ride is really fast they wanted to make it sound like a race car and developed sport catalysers and sport end mufflers made from stainless steel which render an impressive sound.

The car’s interior was slightly modified because Aston Martin made it really comfortable and luxurious. Hamann only installed a new pedal set made from aluminium and customers could also demand exclusive modifications like complete leather equipment or hi-tech multimedia.

luxury electric car - 2009 Cadillac Converj unveiled in Detroit

luxury electric car - 2009 Cadillac Converj unveiled in DetroitDetroit — It’s electric, it can run 64 kilometers without gas and no, it’s not the Chevrolet Volt.

It’s the Cadillac Converj, a new luxury electric car unveiled by General Motors at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Jan. 11.

The new upscale car is a prime example of what GM is capable of when it commits itself to product excellence, said Bob Lutx, GM vice-chairman of global product development.

The company wanted the Converj to have “appeal based on beauty and proportions alone” regardless of the fact the car will be electric, Mr. Lutz said.

And GM wanted to show luxury can be electric, he said.

No details were released about production time-lines for the new vehicle. Converj was the last of many cars showed off during GM’s first news conference of the auto show. Other future products featured included the Chevrolet Orlando, a seven-seater slated to be in production by 2011 and the Chevrolet Spark, touted to get 40 miles per gallon.

GM will hold another news conference fromthe auto show on Jan 12. The show runs until Jan. 25. ¼/p>
